You've probably heard the word Ayurvedic massage — maybe at a yoga studio, in a wellness article, or from a friend who came back from a session practically glowing. But what is it, exactly? And more importantly: is it right for you?

Unlike a standard Swedish massage, Ayurvedic massage isn't one-size-fits-all. It's rooted in a healing tradition thousands of years old that treats your body as a whole — mind, body, and spirit. At Nurture Massage & Wellness in Auburn, CA, we offer five distinct Ayurvedic treatments, each designed for a different need. Here's what you need to know before you book.

What Is Ayurvedic Massage?

Ayurvedic massage is a category of therapeutic bodywork drawn from Ayurveda — one of the world's oldest holistic healing systems, originating in India. The word “Ayurveda” means “the science of life” in Sanskrit, and its approach to health is as individual as the person receiving care.

What makes it different from a conventional massage? In Ayurveda, every person has a unique constitution called a dosha — a combination of the elements Vata (air and space), Pitta (fire and water), and Kapha (earth and water). Your dosha shapes which oils, techniques, and treatments will bring your body back into balance. Rather than applying the same technique to every client, an Ayurvedic practitioner tailors the session to your individual makeup and your current state.

At Nurture, that individualization is the foundation. Every warm herbal oil, every stroke, every modality is chosen for you — not for a generic appointment slot.

The Key Benefits of Ayurvedic Massage

Ayurvedic massage has been used for generations to support physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing. Here's what clients at Nurture most consistently report — and what the Ayurvedic principles behind each treatment explain:

Calms the nervous system and reduces stress

The warm herbal oils used in treatments like Abhyanga penetrate deeply into the tissues, triggering a parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) response in the body. For clients managing chronic stress or anxiety, a single session can feel like hitting a reset button. In my practice, the most common thing I hear after a first Abhyanga session is: “I didn't know my body could feel this settled.”

Improves circulation and supports lymphatic flow

Rhythmic massage strokes stimulate blood flow through the skin, muscles, and underlying tissues — helping the body move nutrients in and waste products out more efficiently. In Ayurveda, this supports what’s called the removal of ama, or accumulated toxins that build up when digestion and circulation are sluggish.

Nourishes the skin and lubricates the joints

Warm, herb-infused oils don’t just rest on the surface. They absorb into the skin layers, leaving skin visibly soft and supple while supporting joint mobility and ease of movement. Clients dealing with dry skin, seasonal stiffness, or achy joints often notice a meaningful difference within a few sessions.

Supports better sleep

Particularly through treatments like Shirodhara — where warm oil flows in a continuous stream over the forehead — Ayurvedic massage can quiet an overactive mind and ease the nervous system into deep rest. Many clients describe the experience as unlike anything else they’ve felt in a bodywork setting. Some say it’s the closest they’ve come to true stillness.

Works on root causes, not just symptoms

This is perhaps the most fundamental difference between Ayurvedic massage and a conventional therapeutic massage. Rather than targeting a tight muscle in isolation, Ayurvedic treatments are designed to work on the underlying imbalance contributing to your symptoms — the why behind the ache, the fatigue, the tension.

A note on health claims: Ayurvedic massage is a powerful complement to your healthcare routine — not a replacement for medical care. If you have a specific health condition, consult your provider before booking.

The 5 Types of Ayurvedic Massage We Offer at Nurture

One of the most common misconceptions about Ayurvedic massage is that it’s a single thing. It isn’t. There are several distinct modalities — and each serves a different purpose. Here’s a guide to the five treatments we offer at Nurture Massage & Wellness:

Abhyanga (Ayurvedic Oil Massage)

Abhyanga is a full-body massage using generous amounts of warm, dosha-specific herbal oil applied head to toe in long, rhythmic strokes. It’s the treatment most people picture when they hear “Ayurvedic massage.” Best for: fatigue, dry skin, achy joints, anxiety, and trouble sleeping. We’ve covered Abhyanga in much more depth in Discover the Magic of Abhyanga: Your Path to Holistic Wellness, and you can find our full service description at the Abhyanga page.

Shirodhara (Third Eye Oil Therapy)

Shirodhara involves a slow, steady pour of warm herbal oil directly over the forehead — the area Ayurveda calls the “third eye.” Combined with a soothing head and neck massage, it works deeply on the nervous system and the mind. Best for: insomnia, anxiety, racing or overactive thoughts, tension headaches, and emotional overwhelm. Clients regularly tell us it’s one of the most profoundly calming experiences of their lives. → Shirodhara service page

Svedana (Herbal Steam Therapy)

Svedana uses herb-infused steam to open the body’s channels, support detoxification, and soften the tissues. It’s often used in combination with Abhyanga as part of a deeper cleansing sequence. Best for: detoxification, congestion, muscle stiffness, and that heavy or sluggish feeling that lingers even after sleep. → Svedana service page

Bliss Therapy

Bliss Therapy at Nurture is a combination treatment — an integration of several Ayurvedic techniques designed for a full mind-body reset. It’s the treatment many clients choose when they’re not sure where to begin, or when they’re experiencing both physical tension and mental fatigue at once. Best for: those seeking a complete reset, or those wanting a thorough introduction to Ayurvedic bodywork. → Bliss Therapy service page

Marma Point Therapy

Marma points are subtle energy centers distributed throughout the body — similar in concept to acupressure points in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Marma Point Therapy applies gentle, intentional pressure to these points to clear energetic blockages and restore flow. Best for: chronic pain patterns, a feeling of being energetically “stuck,” and emotional or spiritual fatigue. → Marma Point Therapy service page

How Do You Know Which Ayurvedic Massage Is Right for You?

The honest answer: it depends on your constitution and what’s out of balance right now.

In Ayurveda, your dosha provides the roadmap. Here’s a brief orientation:

  • Vata types tend toward anxiety, dryness, irregular energy, and joint discomfort when out of balance. They often respond beautifully to the grounding, nourishing warmth of Abhyanga.

  • Pitta types tend toward heat, intensity, inflammation, and burnout when out of balance. Cooling, calming treatments — including Shirodhara — often bring real relief.

  • Kapha types tend toward sluggishness, congestion, and heaviness when out of balance. Svedana and more stimulating, warming work often serves them best.

Most of us are a blend of all three doshas — and that blend shifts with the seasons, your stress level, and what’s happening in your life right now.

When someone new comes to Nurture, I always recommend starting with an Ayurvedic consultation. In our first session, I assess your natural constitution and your current state of imbalance, and from there I can recommend the modality most likely to give you genuine results. You don’t need to know your dosha before you walk through the door. That’s exactly what the consultation is for.

What to Expect During Your First Ayurvedic Massage

First-timers often want to know what the experience will actually feel like — which is a fair question when you’ve never had oil poured over your forehead before.

You’ll be asked about your health, your goals, and any areas of concern before the session begins. The room is warm and quiet. Depending on your treatment, you’ll lie on a comfortable table while warm herbal oil is applied with long, intentional strokes — or recline while oil flows gently over your forehead in the case of Shirodhara.

After 15 years of working with clients in this room, the question I hear most often from first-timers is: “Is it normal to feel this relaxed?” Yes. Completely. You may feel pleasantly drowsy, deeply grounded, or unusually calm. Give yourself some time to integrate — avoid scheduling anything demanding right afterward.

Most sessions run 60–90 minutes depending on the treatment. Wear comfortable clothing you don’t mind a light oil residue on, and skip a heavy meal in the two hours before your appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Ayurvedic massage and Swedish massage?

Swedish massage applies standardized strokes to relax muscles and improve circulation. Ayurvedic massage is tailored to your dosha and uses specific herbal oils, techniques, and sequences chosen for your individual constitution — it works on the whole person, not just the physical layer.

How long does an Ayurvedic massage session last?

Sessions typically run 60–90 minutes. An Abhyanga session at Nurture is 90 minutes; Shirodhara includes a 20-minute head and neck massage followed by the oil therapy portion.

Is Ayurvedic massage good for anxiety and stress?

Yes — Abhyanga and Shirodhara are specifically suited to calming an overactive nervous system. Many clients experiencing anxiety, insomnia, or racing thoughts find Shirodhara especially meaningful. As with any wellness approach, individual results vary.

What should I expect from my first Ayurvedic massage?

A warm room, warm herbal oil applied with intentional strokes, and a feeling of deep calm during and after. Many first-timers are surprised by how settled and rested they feel. See the “What to Expect” section above for details.

Do I need to know my dosha before booking?

Not at all. If you’re new to Ayurveda, an Ayurvedic consultation is the best first step. Sheri will assess your constitution and current imbalance and recommend the treatment that fits you right now.
